Brian’s training in performing and video arts brought him to the School of Media Studies at The New School (TNS) where he earned his MA in 1996 and joined the faculty in 1997. In addition to his many years of production experience, he is also a performing arts producer and social media expert.
Brian has been a teaching artist with the nationally recognized Teen Reviewers and Critics (TRaC) program—for which he has taught dance, media, and multi-arts criticism since 2003. He also leads the after school program at Baryshnikov Arts Center, and in 2016 was a guest educator and speaker for the Hong Kong Arts Festival Young Friends program.
McCormick is an award-winning editor for Gay City News, and has written about performing arts for The Advocate, National Performing Arts Convention, BAMbill, Dance Magazine, Dance Studio Life, and others. He’s been a panelist or moderator for Theater Communications Group, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Brooklyn Arts Council, Movement Research, and the CMJ Music Marathon, among others. He was a member of the New York Dance and Performance Awards (Bessies) committee from 2002-2012, and joined the Board of Directors of Pentacle/Dance Works Inc. in 2014.

After School Critical Response Teens Director Sep 2012 - Present
The BAC After School Critical Response Teens, students selected by BAC's Executive Director, meet weekly at the Baryshnikov Arts Center to talk about, write about, and otherwise respond to performing arts using different approaches and different forms of media. After each workshop, the group goes to see a live performance--theater, dance, performance art--at BAC and other venues around the city. Guest writers and artists are periodically invited to facilitate certain workshops.

Recognized in 2011 and 2012 as a National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award Finalist by the President's Committee on the Art and Humanities and its cultural partners, the TRaC program is an exceptional opportunity for committed high school students who want to explore and fully immerse themselves in the arts of New York City.
Participants see first-hand how artists work, think and live; attend cutting-edge theater, dance and music performances; visit artist studios, galleries and contemporary art museums; learn the art of discussion and critical writing;. Students attend an array of performances and exhibits at different venues throughout the city, discuss performances with critics and artists, and write about the work and their experiences. Live performances are supplemented with screenings, together which provide a broad literacy with respect to the New York arts scene, including histories, communities, practices, systems, and economies.

The awards honor exceptional choreography, performance, music composition, visual design and others areas of dance and performance. The New School is a university in New York City, located mostly in Greenwich Village. From its founding in 1919 by progressive New York educators, and for most of its history, the university was known as the New School for Social Research. Between 1997 and 2005 it was known as New School University. The university and each of its colleges were renamed in 2005.The school is renowned for its teaching, housing the international think tank, World Policy Institute, and hosting the prestigious National Book Awards.
